This year, before the Spring Festival, Li Jiuyue, a blogger of intangible cultural heritage with 16 million followers across the internet, traveled from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, to Lanzhou, Gansu Province, to learn stilt walking. There, she joined a learning team with three local teenage boys who are inheritors of this traditional skill.
Compared to some other intangible cultural heritage skills, stilt walking might not seem particularly rare. However, the boys said that stilts are the only way to see the world beyond their village. They hope to bring blessings to their families through stilt performances. Each step they take is firm, brave, and filled with hope.
From initially wobbling and struggling to grasp the technique, to overcoming her fears and walking steadily, Li Jiuyue on stilts has come to deeply understand the spiritual essence behind this intangible cultural heritage.
In the video released on the second day of the Chinese New Year, she earnestly wrote at the end: "May everyone who fights against fate find their own vastness amidst the wobbles."
When she first entered the field of short video creation, Li Jiuyue's works mainly focused on food, with multiple updates almost every day. Now, as a non-legacy blogger, she might only update once a month, as learning and understanding a non-legacy skill often takes several months. The ups and downs behind this journey are something this young woman embraces with joy.
