The Historic Centre of Macao was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2005.
Located on the Macao Peninsula in the Macao Special Administrative Region, the core area of the Historic Centre consists of 8 squares, 22 recognized historical buildings, and the streets connecting these squares and buildings. These buildings date from the Ming Dynasty to the Republic of China era, preserving the historical essence of over 400 years of Sino-Western cultural exchange. It is the oldest, largest, best-preserved, and most concentrated historic district in China, predominantly featuring Western architecture, harmoniously blended with Chinese elements.
The property serves as a significant testament to the spread of Western religious culture in China and the Far East. It is also a result of over four centuries of cultural exchange, complementarity, and coexistence between Chinese and Western cultures.
